Do kids as young as 3,4 and 5 really need to be spending time surfing the net or playing computer games? What about reading a book or going outside? I agree that computers are useful as educational tools but I cannot think of a single skill that a child of this age cannot learn elsewhere or in another way without adding more screen time to their day. A parent using the computer to find a particular useful fact, snippet of info or something that complements what a child is currently learning and then sharing it with the child is a useful way of using the computer as a tool with no risk of a child exposing themselves to inappropriate content. There are plenty of years ahead for children to learn computer skills - it is not necessary for them to be practising them at this age.

Wow. It's terrifying to think we have to talk about that with our children. We are very open about body stuff with the kiddos. The normal stuff little ones ask about. But we haven't really had to talk about inappropriate stuff they might come across. We're pretty careful with their online time. There's only a few sites they use and we've gone over some safety rules with any site that has chat capabilities (I still marvel that Disney and such has chat for kids). Still, as they get older, I know we'll have to prepare them more.

Proverbs 23:13-14
New Living Translation (NLT)
13 Don’t fail to discipline your children.
They won’t die if you spank them.
14 Physical discipline
may well save them from death.

Hebrews 12:6
New Living Translation (NLT)
For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.

Proverbs 13:24
New Living Translation (NLT)
Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

Great post. It is scary just how much our society is de-railing in this area of parenting. In this life bad choices have bad consequences. A spanking, or "pop," inflicts brief pain to a child's bottom and sends a clear message that bad choices cause pain and that message is truth. Teaching a child this truth is so important. There of course is a right way and wrong way to issue this type of correction. There is a right time and a wrong time. Done correctly, it is far from abuse. It is love.
